We will have more orchids on June 15th!
This novel orchid is a vining, tropical plant that produces the pod we all call a vanilla bean. It is not for the novice gardener, but makes an excellent addition to the orchid hobbyist's collection. Like most tropical orchids, it will require a greenhouse to thrive; it needs high humidity and temperatures dipping below 55 degrees will damage it. Being a vining plants, it will require some sort of support, such as a bamboo stake. We planted ours at the base of a support post in the greenhouse and it thrived; It grew up into the horizontal girders and bloomed like crazy! The problem was the flowers were too high for us to hand pollinate, so it did not produce any vanilla beans. Think about it and don't make our mistake.
These Vanilla Bean Orchids are being sold as 7" to 10" long rooted cuttings. They have been propagated in orchid bark. The cutting will arrive bare root (no bark) with the roots in moistened sphagnum moss in a protective bag to keep them hydrated. You will need to transplant into a pot upon arrival. We recommend orchid bark or a mixed orchid media. Keep them in a warm, humid, moderate light to acclimate after transplanting. Do not use garden soil!
