Product Overview

Vietnamese Red produces a red fleshed fruit that weighs approximately 1 pound.

Self-Fertile- It can use its own pollen to set fruit.

Dragon fruit are a tropical fruiting cactus. Dragon fruit will not grow in cold climates, so make sure that the temperature is above 40 degrees Fahrenheit to prevent cold damage. Protect from hard freezes. Dragon fruit can be grown in containers or in the ground, planted in well-drained soil, full sun and trained to a heavy-duty trellis to support weight of this fast-growing plant. Avoid overplanting into very large containers, instead, gradually increase container size in relation to the plant size. We recommend a complete fertilizer during the growing season. Avoid overwatering in the winter to ensure the plant does not rot off.

All our dragon fruit plants have been greenhouse grown. When you receive your plants, please be patient in acclimating them to their new environment. This means slowly transitioning them from shade to full sun over a period of at least three weeks to avoid sun scald. This could take longer in extreme heat.

    Red Vietnamese DF

This is my favorite fruit so far. This variety is self fertile so use of own flower’s pollen will achieve fruit. I have had only 2 fruits since I purchased cutting about 2 years ago. Next year is expected to be productive as growth is continuous.

    Do not pay more elsewhere!

These well rooted cuttings are worth the $ spent. Bought a plant from a reputed box store and found no root at all. Just the cutting placed in the soil. Will definitely buy again from Cal Poly.

    Good Size Nice plant

I’m not sure if this one is self pollinating just a note for all dragon fruit buyers to be aware that the type of dragon fruit you buy is self pollinating otherwise buy more than one and different types in case they are cuttings from the same plant!!! Anyways this is my second dragon fruit of a different type so that I can pollinate my other that I purchased later down the road. I am in zone 9, California mid northern. I purchased one last year and it is growing fantastically!!! I purchased this one so it would have a mate. It came in wonderful condition about 7 inches tall and an inch wide A little on the smaller side than my other. The dirt did escape the pot but succulents/cacti are very easy to re-pot with no damage as long as the roots don’t completely dry up. So it was fine! Love it

    Dragon fruit "Red Vietnamese"

Posted by Richard Frost on Jan 18th 2021

The Red Vietnamese plant came and is very healthy. It is doing well. When it came it was very wet, the opposite of it's package mate, and wrapped in a wet paper towel, which made the packing peanuts stick to the newest growth and tore it off. The rest of plant is fine and healthy. I'd buy again, definitely. I like helping to support students, even in a small way. Looking forward to a mature plant and fruit!
